What’s the Concern about Wisdom Teeth  and How Do You know if they need Removing?

Wisdom teeth grow at the back of the mouth and are the third and final set of molars to come through. They are in fact the equivalent of a troublesome appendix with their only purpose being to wreak havoc in the mouth. They develop long after the mouth has matured and their non-conforming attitude makes them the true rebels of the world of dentistry. What’s more, some people never grow wisdom teeth and function perfectly fine without them; so for many teens and twenty something’s, it’s often enough to make the pain even more frustrating.

For this reason any Sydney patients suffering pain or swelling around the gums towards the back of the mouth where the molars are present should pay us a visit for an assessment. Using X-rays we can see pretty quickly if your wisdom teeth are causing you problems. As a result our Chatswood dentists will extract wisdom teeth if they are:

• Impacting on other teeth
• Coming through at a funny angle
• Difficult or impossible to clean and maintain on their own
• Or are not coming through without help.

What’s more if a wisdom teeth is partially erupted it can cause the gum to break allowing bacteria to breed in the exposed flap. This is known as Pericoronitis.

Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Wisdom Teeth Sydney – What To Expect … or maybe not!

Just as every person is different all wisdom teeth complications are unique, meaning the procedure for extraction varies from one patient to another. Usually most wisdom teeth can be extracted by a general dentist in the same way as other molars using a chair side procedure. However for more complex cases, surgery may be needed at a health facility with the patient being sedated under a general anaesthetic.

The process for extracting a wisdom tooth is very simple. It can cause anxiety for some patients generally because they know what’s coming but actually, the process itself is pain free and super fast.

During the chair side procedure your Chatswood dentist will first numb the area using anaesthetic. Next forceps are used to widen the tooth socket. Finally the offending tooth is wiggled from side to side until it becomes loose enough to remove in its entirety. Once the wisdom tooth has been removed, the gums will be stitched back in place. Usually the whole process only takes a few minutes but in more difficult cases, it can take around 20 minutes.

Okay so What about  After the Extraction?

While you may have visions of being on a diet of soup and ice cream for the next few years the reality is that patients usually experience mild discomfort and swelling for a couple of days only. Since our Chatswood dental care is tailored to each individual, you’ll be advised on the treatment that is most suitable for you. Our dentist will tell you when to come back to have your stitches removed or in the case of dissolving stitches, we’ll still want to examine the surgery site to check that it has healed properly.
