Good Oral Hygiene  definitely starts at Home!

Here’s an interesting fact! Did you know that a fully grown adult has half the amount of neural pathways that your average 2 year old has? As a result their capacity to learn stuff is immense. So it’s a great time to teach them about the importance of good oral care. However even before they reach the ‘terrible two’s’ it’s important to introduce good oral hygiene and tooth care as early as you can; but when should that be?

The answer is as soon a possible! Here’s why…

Taking care of gums before any teeth erupt is important because it helps to prevent problems with any future teeth formation. This should be done by gently wiping the gums with warm water and a soft clean cloth. In doing so it removes any sugar in the mouth from food and any bacteria created by saliva.

When teeth do eventually come through (usually around the age of 6 months – 1 year) teeth should be gently cleaned with a soft toothbrush twice a day using a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste

Kids Dental

Kids Dentistry in Sydney – Their first visit

We recommend you bring your child to meet our friendly dental team for the first time once their first tooth has made an appearance.

For their very first visit, why not tie their appointment in with your own. This way they can observe your dental treatment and get accustomed to the dental environment, plus they get to meet our fabulous team too!

Then following their first visit to our dental practice, how about bringing them to see us whenever you visit. Just so you know…that should be every six months! This is so that we can talk about their teeth and show them how to brush and floss correctly. An early consultation also lets our holistic children’s dentist assess the conditions of your child’s oral health, keep an eye on the growth progress, and treat any tooth problems in their early stages so as to avoid complications later on.

Fissure Sealants  – Choose your flavour!

Around the age of 5-7 we’ll also suggest a fissure sealant application. This is the age when a child’s first permanent molars tend to come through. When brushed on to the biting surface of the tooth it forms a protective barrier. This in turn helps to prevent cavities by sealing the grooves and pits on the chewing surface of the molar where food particles may otherwise be deposited. Once any gaps have been sealed it makes it easier to clean the teeth. Besides the fact that it’s a quick, easy and painless process, sealants come in some pretty interesting flavours including spearmint, peppermint and citrus mint and kids love them.

So What’s the Magic Formula  for Strong Healthy Teeth?

Don't ignore the veg
Aside from good oral hygiene, a healthy diet has been proven to strengthen teeth. So a good mix of fresh fruit and vegetables is key. While the battle between a child and a plate of sprouts is as old as time, here’s a top tip – try roasting them with olive oil and a little balsamic vinegar for sweetness.
Limit their sugary intake
We know it’s difficult, but try limiting the amount of sweets your child is allowed – Make it a rule to have them after a meal and not before, but more importantly, insist that they brush afterwards.
Exercise
Yep it’s true! While exercise is good for the body it’s also good for the teeth. Studies have shown that regular exercise may actually prevent gum disease so encourage an active lifestyle and the rest will follow.
Regular dental check-ups
Regular visits to our Northsore kids dentist is one of the best ways to keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy. Our team can spot any problems early and give direction in best oral practice when needed.

Orthodontic Treatments – Not the dreaded braces!

Once your child has their permanent teeth our Chatswood dentist may decide that they need orthodontic treatment. Don’t worry! The good news is that not every child needs braces to straighten teeth, but even if they do, we have an experienced orthodontist who can suggest a range of discreet brace options to help. Often early orthodontic treatment can prevent lengthier brace treatment later in life.
