It used to be that braces were the preserve of children but nowadays more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment. They want straighter teeth but without unsightly metal brackets and pain. Sounds a tall order? Well not anymore. Invisalign meets the above criteria and offers other benefits too. But how does Invisalign work and will it be right for me?

We’ll let you into a secret… Invisalign isn’t really a brace… well, not in the conventional meaning. For starters, there are no brackets and no wires involved. Instead, it consists of clear plastic trays that you wear over your teeth. Can you believe, you can even remove it for eating and brushing. So if it’s little more than a gum shield and you don’t have to wear it all day, how on earth does it work?

Invisalign – Not your average brace treatment

You may have noticed that we’ve been talking about Invisalign in the plural. This is because the treatment doesn’t use just one tray, it uses lots of them. They work as a series of trays which gradually move your teeth into a pre-determined position. Each tray moves your teeth by up to 0.25mm. You’ll wear a new tray every 2 weeks and simply dispose of the old one, as you slowly edge towards your goal. Once all of your trays have been worn, your teeth will be beautifully aligned.

How can I get started with Invisalign?

First of all, you’ll need to see an Invisalign dentist – cue Evergreen Dental. We’ve got professional experience of Invisalign and the necessary training to give you the smile you’ve been longing for.

Once we’ve examined your mouth, discussed your goals and aspirations, and spoken about costs, it’s time to prepare your individual Invisalign treatment plan.

We make use of 3D computer technology and digital scans to create a precise on-screen 3D mock-up of your skull and teeth. This done, we can plot the individual movements of your teeth over the course of your Invisalign treatment. We love this technology because it also means we can show our patients how their new smile will look at the end of treatment.

These precise 3D images are used to manufacture your custom-made Invisalign trays. Made from a clear smooth plastic, they won’t irritate your gums like wires would, and since the plastic is light-weight, after getting used to Invisalign, you’ll hardly notice them.

Unlike most other brace systems, Invisalign not only controls the force needed to straighten your teeth but also dictates when the force is to be applied. Just a few teeth are moved at a time during the Invisalign process and this is determined by your Invisalign dentist when they map out your individual treatment plan.

Can Invisalign fix all dental problems?

Invisalign corrects a wide range of dental problems including crowded teeth, gaps, and over/underbites but for more complex cases, your Sydney dentist may recommend more conventional brace treatment. The best thing about Invisalign is that it allows you to go about daily living without feeling conscious about your teeth. No one apart from you and your dentist of course, need ever know that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment!

Invisalign dental treatment – convenience and flexibility

Invisalign is great for adults because it’s just so convenient. Aside from being ultra discreet, other benefits over other teeth straightening systems include: • Less regular visits to your Invisalign dentist because you change trays yourself • Improved oral health because you’re able to remove the trays to brush and floss your teeth • Ease of use for people who play contact sports and need to wear a mouth guard – Invisalign trays can be removed, the conventional mouthguard worn and the Invisalign aligner put back in when finished • No restrictions on your diet because your trays are removed allowing you to eat the foods you enjoy

How long does Invisalign take?

Typically Invisalign has an average treatment time of 12 months but we’ll be able to give you a better indication once your Invisalign dentist has mapped out your treatment. Once you’ve reached your goal of a beautiful straight smile, you’ll need to wear retainers to prevent your teeth from moving back to their former positions, and undoing all of that hard work. Don’t worry, we can discuss retainer options with you when it comes to the time.
